Chronicle of Showa Era Erotic Gegika

Artwork by Tsutsumi Tsutsumu

Back in the 1970s, Japan had something of a porn boom. Strict censorship meant that things like full frontal nudity, pubic hair, and penetration were forbidden, but this only pushed that generation of 'pink' movie directors in ever more imaginative and perverse directions. The world of manga saw a similar trajectory as "Chronicle of Showa Era Erotic Gegika" at the permanently risqué Vanilla Gallery shows.

When the term gekiga (literally "dramatic pictures") was coined it was supposed to denote more serious and sophisticated comics suitable for an adult audience, rather like graphic novels in the West. However, it soon took on the other connation of 'adult.' This X-rated exhibition (over-18s only) focuses on a range of erotic gekiga—including sub-genres like rape, fetishism, S&M, grotesque, and incest—and features work of some of the genre's main artists, such as Ui Agata, Masaru Sakaki, Tsutsumi Tsutsumu, and 'Dirty' Matsumoto (possibly not their real names!).

April 11-30, 2nd Kamata Bldg 4F, 6-10-10 Ginza, Chuo-ku.
