Drawing: The Fourth Horseman

This is a sketch I did shortly after New Year, on 4th January, 2011. At this time of the year our thoughts are focused on the year ahead, so it is interesting that such a grim image should have occurred to me.

It was only 2 months later, when Japan was struck by the massive earthquake and tsunami, that I realized just how prophetic this work was. The background of blue and green suggests a coastal location, while the thundering hooves of the red horse suggest an earthquake; but it is the scythe that swoops over over the pile of skulls that is most uncanny, evoking the tsunami that swept away so many lives.

Who knows what cataclysms I have unleashed by posting it here.
